Sarah Needham
Degree:
Fine Art
University:
Hatfield Polytechnic
Sarah Needham makes work which resonates with the personal, and the historical. She makes abstract paintings with hand mixed paints using pigments chosen for their beauty and their place in the history of trade and mark making. Her work is engaged with the interconnected effects of trade, people, place, story and memory on identity.

Her current work loops between the quiet symbolism that occurs by using these carefully selected pigments, and the non didactic spaces created to allow the viewer freedom to make their own connections. In creating the work she performs an act of remembrance of the role of trade and mark making in creating the culture and society we live in. The form of the work, creating space on a flat surface, is an invitation to the viewer to fall in, to get a little lost and to remember, creating conversations between the past and current lived experience.
